The God Who Meets Us Here
Streams in the Wilderness
Day 2
“When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, ‘Moses! Moses!’
And Moses said, ‘Here I am.’
‘Do not come any closer,’ God said. ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.’”
— Exodus 3:4–5
I used to believe God only showed up in sacred spaces. In churches and temples, in moments of clarity, in seasons where everything made sense. But over time, I’ve learned that He meets us right in the middle of the wilderness — in the confusion, the exhaustion, the ordinary ache of trying to heal.
When Moses encountered God in the desert, it wasn’t on a mountaintop or in a temple. It was in the middle of his wandering. It was while he was tending sheep, carrying regret, and probably wondering if his story had already ended. That’s when God called his name.
Recovery often feels like that — like wandering in circles. But the same God who met Moses meets us here, too. He doesn’t wait for our lives to be fixed. He calls to us where we are, and He names the very ground we stand on as holy.
For families and loved ones walking beside someone in recovery, this truth is healing too — that even the waiting, the hoping, the crying-out seasons are sacred. God is not distant from our pain. He enters it.
If you listen closely in the wilderness, you might hear Him say your name again — softly, lovingly, reminding you that He’s been here the whole time.
Prayer for your day.
Lord, help me recognize Your presence in the middle of my wilderness. Teach me to see this hard ground as holy, because You are here. Amen.
